These Air Fryer Fish Tacos are so easy to make but taste like they came from your favorite restaurant. The tilapia can be cooked in the air fryer straight from frozen, making this so simple and quick.

Why You Will Love this Recipe

This air fryer fish taco recipe is easy to pull together, especially since you can grab the fish straight out of the freezer, no thawing required. I love that tilapia is a mild tasting fish that is also affordable. The seasoning mix gives the fish so much flavor and the cabbage slaw add both fresh crunch and creaminess.

What You Need

  • Frozen Tilapia – I get mine from Costco, but you can find it in the freezer section of most grocery stores
  • Seasonings
    • Salt
    • Garlic Powder
    • Cumin
    • Chipotle Powder
    • Cayenne – omit if you don’t want it to be spicy
  • Cabbage Slaw
    • Coleslaw Mix – this is just the veggie coleslaw mix that is found in the refrigerated section of the supermarket
    • Greek Yogurt – plain, unsweetened; I use this as a higher protein, lower fat option but you can also use mayo or sour cream if you prefer
    • Lime Juice
    • Salt
  • Tortillas – you can use your favorite. I like to use low carb tortillas or Siete almond flour tortillas
  • Toppings
    • I love to add my Quick Pickled Onions
    • Cheese – queso fresco is my personal favorite for fish tacos
    • Jalapeños
    • Cilantro

Let’s Make Air Fryer Fish Tacos

*full recipe and instructions in the recipe card at the end of the post

  1. The first step is to make the seasoning mixture of salt, garlic powder, cumin, chipotle powder, and cayenne
  2. Then we will liberally season the frozen tilapia on all sides and place in the air fryer basket and spray with avocado oil spray (or cooking spray of choice)
  3. Heat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and cook the tilapia for about 15/18 minutes – timing will vary on the thickness of the tilapia (see notes section of the recipe card for more info)
  4. While the tilapia is cooking, add the coleslaw mix to a mixing bowl along with the plain greek yogurt, lime juice and salt – stir to completely combine and set aside
  5. When the tilapia is done (internal temp should be 145’F and the flesh should be white and easily flake apart with a fork) add some of the coleslaw mixture to the base of your tortilla and put some flaked tilapia on top
  6. Then add your toppings of choice and enjoy! We love pickled onions, queso fresco, fresh cilantro and fresh jalapeños with lime wedges served on the side

Nutrition facts are auto-calculated and will vary based on the ingredients used – these do not include toppings (just the fish, slaw and low carb tortilla)
Serving size is for two tacos
*the cooking time will vary based on the thickness of the fish – if it is thinner, start with 12 minutes and check. If it is thicker, it may take up to 18/20 minutes but check at 15 (the internal temp should be 145’F and the flesh should be white and flake apart easily)
If you are using thawed tilapia, cooking time will be around 7/10 minutes, again varying based on thickness
**if you do not like plain greek yogurt (I used it to lighten up the recipe while adding protein) you can use mayo or sour cream as well
