Collagen has been growing in popularity lately but a lot of people still have questions about why you would use it. I have been adding collagen peptides into my coffee and recipes for over a year and my body has truly reaped the benefits of it. I don’t take very many supplements because I am working on getting most of what my body needs through nutrition, but collagen is one that I take regularly and recommend to everyone. Here’s why….
1. Relief From Joint Pain
Being 5′ 10″ and weighing 287 pounds (at my heaviest), my poor joints had taken a beating. It made it incredibly difficult to workout or truthfully, even walk up the stairs to my apartment. My right knee has been the worst, it would grind and crack with every step. I have experienced a notable difference in my joint health since I first started using collagen as a supplement to my regular diet. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body, but by the time we are 21 years old, that supply begins to decrease contributing to joint pain and stiffness, arthritis, osteoporosis, and injuries. Increasing your intake of collagen in your diet has been known to decrease these effects.
Yep, I said it. Regularity can be a huge issue for many people, especially those on a low carb, high fat diet. Another one of many collagen benefits is that it holds water in the intestines, which aids in digestion. And some of the main amino acids in collagen fight inflammation and can help heal your intestinal lining. A lot of medical issues begin in the gut, as I have personally experienced, so a supplement like collagen can be life changing. Since I started taking collagen consistently, I am more regular and less bloated.
3. Glowing Skin, Strong Nails, and Hair Growth
In addition to gut health, regularity and relief from joint pain, collagen benefits your skin, nails and hair. Collagen increases skin elasticity and hydration, which helps prevent dry skin and leaves you glowing. Extreme weight loss can cause hair loss, but collagen has helped my hair grow longer and stronger than I have seen it in years! Other collagen benefits include helping to hide stretch marks and age spots, and improving the appearance of cellulite. Personally, I haven’t seen these benefits as much yet, but if I’m being honest, I’m not surprised. I’ve been overweight most of my life and had two babies, I can’t expect a complete miracle! I can say that I love collagen’s effect on my nails; they are stronger and not brittle at all.
4. Muscle Recovery
One of my favorite things to do in the gym is to lift heavy weights—it makes me feel strong, sexy and confident. Heavy lifting causes muscle tears, which then repair stronger and bigger than before. The amino acids in collagen benefit muscles in the recovery phase, which is vital to overall strengthening. Using collagen regularly is also reported to help prevent injury in the gym and help the body recover from an existing injury because it strengthens our connective tissue and can increase bone mineral density.
5.) Weight Loss
I lost most of my weight by following the Ketogenic Diet and my favorite way to start the day was with a fatty coffee (bulletproof coffee). I always added in collagen because it gave me the boost of protein that I needed to stay full until my first meal. That in combination with all of the other benefits that I stated above have helped me lose 60 lbs. It is a great boost of protein and nutrients to help aid in your weight loss journey.
Does it add any flavor to your coffee or whatever you add it into? I don’t get any flavor when I only use one scoop, sometimes I can get a little flavor when I use two.
Do you only add it to coffee? Adding it into my coffee every morning is my favorite way to use it, but I also add it into soups, stews, tea, smoothies, baked goods and more.
